<p>When I switched from my low carb diet to a healthy detox diet, I noticed an immediate boost in my moods and temperament. I felt calmer, less cranky, and more clearheaded and alert. My weight loss coach at the time explained that the switch resulted from the increased levels of a highly important brain chemical, serotonin. Insufficient levels of this chemical are involved in depression, sleeplessness, migraine, PMS and impulsive behaviour - including binge eating.</p>
<p>Nice, high levels of serotonin, by contrast, produce a state of comfort, calm and alertness.</p>
<p>Our bodies make serotonin from the amino acid known as tryptophan, which is present in whole grains, legumes, root vegetables, eggs, turkey and some dairy products. To manufacture this essential chemical, our brains also need plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as the essential fatty acids found in nuts and seeds. Garlic is also helpful in serotonin production.</p>
<p>I realised instantly that my low carb diet had been sadly lacking in some of the key nutritional elements needed to make serotonin.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I felt so cranky and low energy while I was on that diet! And why I feel so much better now.</p>
<p>Psychiatrists and mental health professionals are particularly concerned about the way that low carb diets restrict their patients&#8217; serotonin levels. They are struck, as I now am, about the relationship between serotonin and weight gain, as well as the link between low levels of serotonin and addictive, impulsive and compulsive behaviour. Low levels of serotonin make it much harder to &#8216;just say no&#8217;, which could be a factor in binge eating. In addition, people whose serotonin levels are too low may find themselves ravenous for carbs and sweet foods in a misguided effort to medicate their nutritional imbalance.</p>
<p>The solution for such serotonin-starved dieters is not to eat the refined sugar and flour that they crave - that just produces a sugar high, followed by a sugar crash, as carb cravers know only too well. But it&#8217;s also no solution for the serotonin-deficient to unduly restrict their carb intake on a low carb diet plan, which may be setting them up for serious nutritional deficiencies, as well as mood disorders, migraines and other hormonal problems.</p>
<p><strong>A Healthy Low Carb Diet</strong></p>
<p>Instead, serotonin-deficient dieters would do much better with the healthy carbs found in root vegetables, whole grains and legumes along with their eggs, turkey and a modified intake of dairy products.</p>
<p>They also should make sure to get more fresh fruit, green leafy vegetables and garlic - precisely the Liver-Loving, Colon-Caring Foods recommend on a healthy detox diet.</p>

<p>Chromium picolinate is a synthetic form of chromium, an essential trace mineral abundantly available in most foods. Chromium plays a role in fat metabolism, but no one needs extra amounts by way of weight loss supplements</p>
<p>Excess chromium picolinate can cause flushing, nervousness,  and palpitations. It can also cause iron deficiency.</p>
<p>Ephedra is a herbal extract also called Ma huang. It may be a &#8220;natural&#8221; substance, but its active ingredients, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, are chemicals that have a strong effect on the body.</p>
<p>They suppress appetite by stimulating both the nervous system and the thyroid gland. They also cause your air passages to widen, which is why ephedra is promoted as a &#8220;natural&#8221; decongestant. Among the side effects of ephedra are numbness in the hands and feet due to constriction of blood vessels, elevation of blood pressure, nervousness, and palpitations.</p>
<p>But the problems with ephedra and other thyroid stimulators and similar weight loss supplements go beyond their side effects. If you have a healthy thyroid, it doesn&#8217;t need stimulating. If you have an under active thyroid, you should see a doctor. It&#8217;s as simple as that.</p>
<p>Also, don&#8217;t be swayed by claims that these weight loss products is &#8220;natural&#8221; or &#8220;herbal&#8221;.</p>
<p>Regardless of its source or how it is made, once a substance has been metabolized by the body, it acts like the chemical it is.</p>
<p>&#8220;Natural&#8221; herbs and medicines are no safer than those made by pharmaceutical companies, and in many cases then are less safe.</p>
<p>If you are buying weight loss supplements, always read labels carefully and avoid all weight loss products that contain chromium picolinate or ephedra.</p>

It&#8217;s also a fantastic way to hydrate you and makes an excellent replacement for tea and coffee. There&#8217;s lots of healthy juice recipes that make enough for two, but you may find that you like them so much that you drink most of it yourself!</p>
<p>Alternatively you can freeze the second part straight away, as this preserves the nutrient content, or cover immediately and place in the fridge to enjoy later in the day. Or you can put it into a thermos flask and take it to work to enjoy as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon energizer. Many healthy juice diet recipes have natural stimulants in them, so you could find that juicing will soon replace your tea or coffee habit.</p>
<p>To get the most from most juice recipes you do need to invest in a good juicer machine. This is one product where you do get what you pay for. But when choosing your juicer you may also want to think about ease of cleaning and size - both these factors can affect your enjoyment of juicing. We have become such juicing fans that we have a dedicated juicing corner in our kitchen which makes it easy to juice at any time of the day.</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s one of my favorite juice diet drinks for getting off to a healthy start in the morning:</strong></p>
<p>Sunshine Starter</p>
<p>This great-tasting juice is a wonderful introduction to the combination of fruit and vegetables. One of the most glorious things about this juice is the color. It really is sunshine in a glass - a gorgeous warm yellowy orange, enough to bring a smile to anyone&#8217;s face first thing in the morning.</p>
<p>Serves 2 (large glasses)</p>
<ul>
<li>3 carrots</li>
<li>1cm (1/2 inch) ginger root, peeled</li>
<li>2 apples</li>
<li>2 oranges</li>
<li>1 1/2 yellow peppers</li>
</ul>
<p>Chop all the vegetables and fruit into manageable sizes. Juice the carrots first and then the ginger, before juicing the rest of the ingredients.</p>
<ul>
<li>Calories: 174</li>
<li>Fat: 0.94g</li>
<li>Protein: 2.47g</li>
<li>Carbs: 43.21g</li>
</ul>
<p>If you decide you don&#8217;t want to go the whole hog and follow an all juice diet, having a healthy juice drink or smoothie for breakfast will do your weight loss diet a world of good, and help naturally detox your body at the same time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Making a new years resolution to start a weight loss diet sounds simple enough. The problems arise with actually sticking to it for anything longer than a couple of days and not becoming confused and overwhelmed by the masses of false, counter productive and plain wrong information (or should I say mis-information) about the best way to lose weight.</p>
<p>Every January literally millions of us make a resolution to lose those extra few pounds (and then some) we packed away over the holiday period - unfortunately, a lot of people get overwhelmed with the amount of conflicting information being pushed in our faces, and ultimately end up opting to follow the latest fad diet or celebrity endorsed weight loss program (without the celebrity in question revealing that they actually had surgery to remove most of their fat!)</p>
<p>A survey back in 2004 revealed that over 30% of us who start a weight loss diet as a new years resolution have abandoned it before February, having lost little or no weight, or in some cases actually gained a few more pounds.</p>
<p>Most fad diets don&#8217;t work - in fact most diets don&#8217;t. Why? Simply because your restricting your calorific and food intake, which is not something your body can allow you to continue with for too long. So no matter how strong your will power is, your body will ultimately win your over. Instead, why not resolve to eat healthily, get plenty of exercise and set some realistic goals that will help you lose weight and keep it of forever. Here&#8217;s some of my favorite weight loss tips:</p>
<p>1. Start small. Set yourself small and easily achievable short term goals. Committing to losing 20 pounds by Valentines day is a bag task - and still 6 weeks away. Aim for 1 pound a week. When you set and achieve smaller short term goals you&#8217;ll be amazed at the positive impact it has on your motivation. And 1 pound a week is easily achievable - just aim to cut your calories by 3500 a week (500 a day) and you&#8217;re there. Or do some extra exercise that will burn off 500 calories a day. A brisk walk burns about 350 a hour.</p>
<p>2. Track your progress. Track how you&#8217;re doing on a daily basis. Have you consume 500 calories less today than normal? That can be eating 250 less and burning off the other 250 with extra exercise. If you commit to walk 30 minutes make a note of it in your journal. Are you going to do 25 press ups and 50 sit ups every day? Keep track of your progress and make a note of how easy it was. After a week or so you should notice that you can do more sit-ups before your stomach muscles start to tire.</p>

<p>Most new years resolutions include some form of weight loss or exercise regime, so here&#8217;s some high tech weight loss tips to help get you started.</p>
<p>Losing weight is simply about doing the math. You must be burning off more calories than you consume - nothing earth shattering there! In order to lose one pound of excess fat, you need to consume 3500 calories fewer than your body needs. 3500 calories can be quite a lot of food, so a weight loss goal of 1 or 2 pounds a week is easily achievable and ideal.</p>
<p>The best to lose weight is to burn off these 3500 calories through a combination of exercise and reduce food intake. One hour of walking burns off between 300 and 400 calories, so if you can exercise for 30 minutes a day and reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories a day, that&#8217;s the equivalent of about 6000 calories a week, or close to 2 pounds weight loss.</p>
<p>A great tool I found to help you determine which exercises you want to perform is the <a href="http://www.shapeup.org/interactive/phys1.php" target="_blank">Physical Activity Selector</a>. Another of my weight loss tips is to keep a nutrition diary. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Weight Loss Diet Tips - Make Sure You&#8217;re Getting Enough Calcium</strong></p>
<p>A lot of restrictive weight loss diets are very low in calcium, which has a very dramatic (and negative) impact on your health - especially for women. The problem with calcium is that many women think drinking milk and eating dairy products, which are high in calcium, will make them fat. But the most recent evidence supports the view that calcium is actually a fat-buster, not a weight loss diet buster. In fact, it&#8217;s thought that calcium can help prevent and treat excess weight gain and obesity.</p>
<p>However, making sure you eat plenty of dairy products on a weight loss diet is probably not the best thing for your health - I&#8217;m a strong advocate of dairy free diets, and noticed massive improvements in my own health since I cut out dairy several years ago. There are many other very healthy and very high sources of calcium without having to eat more dairy.</p>
<p>Soy based products for example (like soy milk etc) are high in calcium, as are green vegetables - and if all else fails there&#8217;s a lot of very good calcium supplements on the market - just make sure they contain vitamin D as well, as that helps your body absorb the calcium.</p>
<p>Although the specific scientific mechanisms are not as yet fully understood, people on a weight loss diet with a low calcium intake are thought to have an increased ability to store excess calories as body fat.</p>
<p>High levels of dietary calcium in a weight loss diet, on the other hand, can increase your body&#8217;s ability to burn fat. The calcium mechanism is thought to relate partly to the effect calcium has on insulin. High insulin levels tend to cause excess dumping of fatty acids in the fat cells. If the diet is low in calcium, insulin levels rise. This sends a signal to the fat cells to increase their production of fat.</p>
<p>So it seems that maintaining a high level of dietary calcium is important for long-term weight management. Calcium is also important in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, and it plays a role in the constriction and relaxation of your blood vessels, contributing to healthy blood pressure. Newer studies even suggest that a higher intake of calcium may reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.</p>
<p><strong>How To Increase Your Calcium Intake On a Weight Loss Diet</strong></p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t like milk (or like me you are dairy free), tinned fish are another rich source of calcium, especially if you eat the bones. Try pilchards, sardines and salmon. Excessive amounts of spinach, tea and coffee can negatively affect your body&#8217;s ability to absorb calcium. The amount of calcium in one 300ml glass of milk can be obtained from one 200g pot of soy yoghurt. A 300ml glass of fortified orange juice supplies about 35 per cent of your daily calcium requirement and 25% of your vitamin D needs.</p>

Perhaps the quote &#8220;If lose weight exercise plans were a drug it would be the most widely prescribed drug in the world&#8221; goes some way to convey how important it is.</p>
<p>Physical activity results in numerous health benefits, with or without quick weight loss. Regardless of this, studies have consistently shown that if you are serious about keeping your weight down or maintaining your existing weight then physical activity and weight loss exercise needs to be a rule that is applied full time.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t panic. This doesn&#8217;t mean you have to follow a diet exercise plan constantly, but it does need to be a consistent element in your life.</p>
<p><strong>The benefits of weight loss exercise include:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>less abdominal fat</li>
<li>lower blood pressure</li>
<li>an improved ratio of good blood fats to bad ones</li>
<li>enhanced insulin action</li>
<li>protection from cardiovascular diseases</li>
</ul>
<p>Even if you are overweight or obese, a regular lose weight exercise program helps you live longer. For these reasons, experts recommend habitual physical activity as primary therapy for those who are overweight. However, I believe the challenge is on two levels:</p>
<ol>
<li>We have an unrealistic idea of how much weight loss exercise we need to do for our health and for weight loss.</li>
<li>We need to learn to love to move so we enjoy physical lose weight exercise.</li>
</ol>
<p>For health benefits, the Chief Medical Officer recommends 30 minutes of moderate-paced diet exercise, five or more days a week. Moderate-paced exercise is the equivalent of walking briskly enough to feel warm. For example, if you are wearing several layers, you should feel warm enough to remove a layer. The 30 minutes can be taken in one bout or broken into three shorter bouts of 10 minutes.</p>
<p>Studies suggest that this level of exercise helps protect against 20 known diseases including heart disease, some cancers, osteoporosis, depression and high blood pressure. This level of exercise has been cited as the equivalent to the popular 10,000 steps a day message using a pedometer.</p>
<p>In terms of weight loss, however, five lots of exercise for 30 minutes won&#8217;t make a huge contribution, unless it is accompanied by a restriction in your calorie intake.</p>
<p>For weight loss, the recommendations are to increase physical activity levels progressively to at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. Studies have shown that you will lose weight with this amount of activity, together with adapting your calorie intake.</p>
<p>For optimum benefit, however, try to increase this to 200-300 minutes (3.3 to 5 hours) per week or more than 2,000 kcal of energy expenditure. Broken down on a daily basis, this equates to 44-60 minutes, five days a week.</p>
<p>The energy expended by people who lost 25kg and kept it off for five years was 2,500 kcal per week for women and 3,300 kcal per week for men, with walking being the most popular form of lose weight exercise. This level of physical activity is very high and equates to about 60-90 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re panicking about where you&#8217;re going to find time for all this weight loss exercise - don&#8217;t. You can achieve all of this with walking. Walking is the cheapest and most accessible form of exercise for the vast majority of people. When incorporated into daily living it can be a significant way to achieve the recommended amount of exercise, whether you are learning to love to move for health, to maintain your weight or to achieve weight loss.</p>

<p>One of the questions I get asked a lot is &#8220;how many calories should I eat to lose weight?&#8221; While there&#8217;s never really a simple answer to that question, there&#8217;s a lot you can do to get an idea of how much food you need to eat based of your lifestyle and the total calories per day to lose weight.</p>
<p><strong>Calculate Your Calories Needed Per Day</strong></p>
<p>We all need energy from the food we eat, but the amount of energy our bodies actually bum off each day and the calories needed per day depends on how physically active we are. Any calories we don&#8217;t burn off through our daily lives are laid down as body fat, and excess body fat is associated with health risks.</p>
<p>To help us get the balance right it&#8217;s important to establish a truer picture of our Current Energy Needs (CEN). Our CEN is the number of calories we need to do our everyday tasks. These needs will vary depending upon our weight, our metabolism and how we move our bodies during each day. If you are watching your weight it is essential you establish what your CEN is.</p>
<p><strong>How Many Calories Should I Eat A Day</strong></p>
<p>Studies have shown that we often overestimate how physically active we are by up to 45 per cent, and underestimate how much we eat by just over 50 per cent - so we are introducing a large potential error right from the beginning.</p>
<p>The bottom line for weight loss is that you need to make sure you are expending more energy than you are consuming. So until you have a true picture of your CEN, which will be dependent upon how much physical activity you are doing, you will be making it harder for yourself to adjust your habits effectively and lose weight.</p>
<p><strong>How To Calculate Your CEN</strong></p>
<p>To establish your CEN, and determine exactly how many calories should I eat to lose weight, follow these three steps:</p>
<ol>
<li>Step 1: Decide which physical activity category best fits your current lifestyle (see table below). Remember to think about your daily accumulated activity as well as any structured exercise you may take when working out your calories needed per day.</li>
<li>Step 2: Find your activity factor for your physical activity category from the table below.</li>
<li>Step 3: Multiply your activity factor by your current weight in pounds. The resulting number is the approximate number of calories you need to maintain your weight.</li>
</ol>
<p>The maths looks like this:</p>
<p>activity factor x weight in pounds = current energy needs.</p>
<p>Step 1: Which Physical Activity Category Applies to You?</p>
<p>You are Sedentary if:</p>
<ul>
<li>your job or lifestyle involves mostly sitting, standing or light walking</li>
<li>you take structured exercise once a week or less</li>
<li>your daily step total with a pedometer is 5,000 or less.</li>
</ul>
<p>You are Moderately Active if</p>
<ul>
<li>your job or lifestyle requires more physical activity than light walking (such as full-time house-cleaning o</li>
<li>some sort of manual work)</li>
<li>you get 45-60 minutes of structured exercise three times a week</li>

</ul>
<p>You are Active if:</p>
<ul>

<p>A 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that women who had eaten a serving of almonds had higher levels of cholecystokinin (a hormone associated with satiety from eating fatcontaining foods) in their systems than men did. In practical terms this means that while almonds may leave both women and men with a feeling of &#8220;satisfaction&#8221;, women may stay full longer.</p>
<p>There is ongoing research into the effects of the act of &#8220;chewing&#8221; on satiety hormone release. For example, researchers at King&#8217;s College in London found that almonds appear to help block absorption of carbohydrates, block their own fat from being absorbed, and improve satiety in both men and women.</p>
<p>According to a 2003 study in the International Journal of Obesity, subjects who added eighty-four grams (about three handfuls) of almonds to a low-calorie diet enhanced weight loss when compared to a low-fat, low-calorie diet alone. The diet that included almonds produced greater and longer sustained weight loss.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve often wondered about how to lose weight quickly, as I&#8217;ve always considered myself &#8220;a few pounds above my fighting weight&#8221;, but never really been able to motivate myself to start a diet and lose weight the traditional way. So I was pleasantly shocked and surprised when I jumped on the scales last week - seems I may have discovered how to lose weight quickly after all. Wanna know how I did it?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the first week in August and we&#8217;ve just got back from our summer vacation. Our summer hols are invariably 10 to 14 days camping somewhere in our pretty spacious trailer tent. With two young kids and a large German Shepherd (called Jess) you need a pretty big tent just to fit everything in. Anyway, I&#8217;d been trying to lose weight for the last couple of months in anticipation of the holiday, but without much luck - and I certainly had discovered how to lose weight quickly during my latest weight loss venture.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d tried two new weight loss diets in the two months leading up to our vacation, but only managed to lose about 3 pounds - and I&#8217;m not convinced that was due to the diet programs anyway.</p>
<p>So when it came time to pack our things and head out, I was pretty much the same weight as when I started, and any last minute ideas of how to lose weight quickly were pretty much dead in the water.</p>
<p>We camped at a beautiful purpose built camp site half way up some hills, and in easy reach of the local beach - the views out over the sea were quite spectacular - at least they were when the site wasn&#8217;t submerged in clouds and rain!</p>
<p>One of the most popular (or should I say common) weight loss tips I hear about a lot (and read about in all the weight loss magazines I continue to waste my money on) is that regular exercise should be part of any weight loss program. Well, it seems exercise could be the secret about how to lose weight quickly. The reason I say this is that on our holiday I must have walked about 3 miles every day (Jess loves her walks) which is probably 2 miles a day further than when I&#8217;m at home.</p>
<p>Half way through the holiday I started to notice that my clothes were getting a little loser than normal, and I wasn&#8217;t nearly as much out of breath at the end of the walks as I was on the first couple of days. By the end of the break, they were quite a good bit looser. I hadn&#8217;t made any drastic changes to my diet - in fact, if anything my diet was worse than when I&#8217;m back home, mainly because it&#8217;s not as easy to prepare and cook healthy meals when you&#8217;re living under canvas and catering for two young kids as well. The main difference in my routine, that I can think of, was that I walked 3 miles a day instead of 1 for those 2 weeks.</p>
<p>So it would appear that if you really want to know how to lose weight quickly, you should take as much exercise as possible on a regular basis. If that means getting off the metro a couple of stops early and walking the last 20 minutes, why not give it a shot?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s some new research from Australia that reveals how to burn fat faster, and as a personal trainer, one of the most frequent questions I get asked is how to burn fat - so I thought it would be a good topic to discuss here.</p>
<p>You&#8217;re no doubt aware that there&#8217;s lots of &#8220;fat burning foods&#8221; that can potentially help with fat burning, but they&#8217;re not really going to help you burn fat fast. Don&#8217;t get me wrong - they are foods that should definitely be part of your healthy diet, but if you really want to learn how to burn fat fast, this will be worth your time.</p>
<p>Ideally, to burn fat fast you need to be exercising on a regular basis - like 3 or 4 times a week. If you&#8217;re doing any fat burning exercises (typically aerobic exercises), you&#8217;re going to get benefit from them through increased metabolism.</p>
<p>To lose weight, you typically have to burn off more energy than you take in - so if you burn up 3000 calories a day, so long as you consume less than 3000 calories a day you will lose some weight. Ideally the calories you consume should be from high protein, low fat foods, so that you&#8217;re body can concentrate on burning the excess fat to make up the extra calories it needs.</p>
<p>So, getting back to exercise as a method of how to burn fat, let&#8217;s take the treadmill as an example. The best way to burn fat in this way is to perform the exercise at a gradual pace for at least 20 - 30 minutes. When you exercise at a slow or gradual rate, your body burns more fat for energy. If you exercise at a faster rate, you&#8217;re body uses it&#8217;s stored levels of glucose and carbohydrates for energy. So pacing yourself and exercising for longer periods will help burn the fat for energy - and as your body is using up less glucose, you will have the energy and stamina to exercise for longer periods.</p>
<p>So my tip on how to burn fat fast is to perform some kind of aerobic exercise (like the treadmill or exercise bike) 3 or 4 times a week, for at least 20 minutes per session. Make sure you eat plenty of protein, simple carbs (like vegetables) and keep your intake of saturated and animal based fats low.</p>

<p>Chromium Can Help</p>
<p>It might not be the waist-whittling miracle mineral that some advertisements tout it as, but according to the latest research, but what is the best weight loss pill could well be chromium picolinate (a supplemental form of chromium) which may indeed help build lean tissue and considerably reduce fat in adults who exercise.</p>
<p>In one study of 59 college-age students at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, researchers found that women taking 200 micrograms of chromium picolinate a day gained almost twice as much lean body mass as those who did not take the supplements, an effect that could result in long-term reductions in body fat, since lean body mass burns more calories than fat.</p>
<p>To better understand what is the best weight loss pill, researchers reported: &#8220;What makes the effectiveness of chromium more and more believable is that the results we see in humans are so well-documented in animal studies,&#8221; says Richard Anderson, Ph.D., lead scientist in the nutrient requirements and functions laboratory at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland and a leading chromium researcher. And although chromium will benefit only those who are deficient, Dr. Anderson reports that most people in Westernized countries receive only 25 percent of the Daily Value of 120 micrograms. So most people are deficient in chromium.</p>
<p>Chromium also improves the effectiveness of insulin, the hormone that allows cells to pick up glucose (a simple sugar that your body uses for fuel) from the bloodstream. For this reason, chromium may also be helpful in preventing diabetes, which is common in people who are overweight. <p>Forget that &#8220;ashes to ashes, dust to dust&#8221; stuff. Water to water is more like it. Our aquatic ancestors brought the sea with them when they crawled on land, and human beings remain mostly fluid. We&#8217;re 56 percent fluid, to be exact - but sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the degree of bloat.</p>

<p>People who retain fluid know just how easy it is to swell up like a sponge. &#8220;Weight fluctuations of as much as four to five pounds in a single day are not uncommon in women with fluid retention problems, but drinking water can help to loss weight and overcome water retention&#8221; says Marilynn Pratt, M.D., a physician in private practice in Playa del Rey, California, who specializes in women&#8217;s health.</p>
<p>Bloating occurs when fluid that normally flows through the body in blood vessels, lymph ducts and tissues gets trapped in tissues in the interstitial spaces, the tiny channels between cells. The fluid flows through the membranes of tiny blood capillaries into the tissue cells because of osmotic pressure (cell wall pressure), which is controlled by electrolytes such as sodium.</p>
<p>A high sodium level attracts more fluid from the blood into the cells, where the fluid gets trapped and the cells become overhydrated. This occurs more readily in women, because their tissues are designed to fluctuate or expand for pregnancy. To combat it you need to reduce salt intake and drink more water to help loss weight caused by water retention.</p>
<p>Lots of things can cause waterlogged tissues: allergic reactions to foods, heart and kidney problems and prescription drugs such as hormones. In women, hormonal changes often cause bloating beginning seven to ten days prior to menstruation, as higher levels of estrogen and progesterone during that part of the cycle cause the body to retain salt (sodium) and therefore to retain fluid in tissues- &#8220;Replacement hormones (especially estrogen alone) can also cause substantial bloating and weight gain. Drinking more water will help loss weight in this case as it helps flush the sodium from the body&#8221; says Dr. Pratt.</p>
<p>Usually, fluid retention is uncomfortable but not health-threatening. People who retain fluid because of heart or kidney problems, however, or who are taking diuretics (water pills) need to be under a doctor&#8217;s care for their problems, says Dr. Pratt.</p>
<p>Nutritional changes for fluid retention are meant to counteract hormonal changes, balance the minerals that influence body fluid and eliminate foods that trigger bloating in some people.</p>
